Pacific-Rim-Quad-PosterGuillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is finally hitting the multiplex today, and after months of impressive promotion from Warner Bros., we’re really looking forward to seeing how it performs at the box office.

Jon caught an early screening of the movie – you can read our review here – and thought it was a good but flawed blockbuster.

And as the film heads into theatres this weekend, Warner Bros. have released a new clip via Yahoo Movies that teases the epic scale we can expect from one of the year’s most mammoth movies.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes–a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)–who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, and Idris Elba take the lead here, starring alongside Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman.

Del Toro directs from a script he co-wrote with Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans). And with talk of Pacific Rim 2 already abuzz, it will be interesting to see if there’s a franchise here on the table following its box office debut.

Pacific Rim is released in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D today, July 12th, in the US and UK. Here’s the latest clip to whet your appetites.
