The past few years has seen the emergence of plenty of older action heroes, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It adds some variety to what we see on the big screen, and if you’re not a fan of seeing the likes of Kurt Russell and Samuel L. Jackson kicking ass, you might just be dead inside. However, as great as the actors may be, many characters are NOT.

Whether we’re talking about heroes who are getting too old for this sh*t or have just outstayed their welcome for any number of reasons, these over hill action stars need to go.

Some may still have their good points, but for the most part, it’s time for them to call it a day. Whether the actors playing them are just no longer suitable for this kind of role or the characters themselves have fundamental issues which can’t be addressed by more and more movie appearances, the fact is that all of these guys need to find a retirement home.

10. Iron Man

Iron Man 2

Look, I love Robert Downey Jr. and his take on Iron Man (even though I’m #TeamCap all the way), but Phase 3 should probably bring his stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a close.

While it’s great to see Tony Stark popping up in Captain America: Civil War, the actor’s reluctance to commit to Iron Man 4 robs us of the chance to see the Armoured Avenger take centre stage in his own solo outing, and that’s why a younger actor being brought in to replace him would arguably be for the best at this stage.

Plus, while Downey Jr. does still look great, the days of him being a believable playboy/superhero are definitely on the horizon, so calling it quits sooner rather than later would perhaps be better in the long run.
