Nicolas Cage has signed up to star as Dracula in Chris McKay’s monster feature ‘Renfield.’
Cage joins Nicholas Hoult who will play the title character R.M. Renfield, Chris McKay will direct.
‘Renfield’ is a fictional character that appears in Bram Stoker’s 1897 Gothic horror novel ‘Dracula’. He was an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions that compel him to eat living creatures in the hope of obtaining their life force for himself. It later turns out he is actually a servant of Dracula.
Plot details are currently unknown, though it’s believed to be a modern-day adventure story with a comedic tone.
‘Rocketman’ helmer Dexter Fletcher was originally attached to direct the project.
This version of the project is based on an original pitch from ‘The Walking Dead’ author Robert Kirkman with Ryan Ridley (“Rick and Morty”) penning the script. Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst produce. McKay would also produce.
The movie marks Cage’s return to a big studio film after a decade of making obscure but Cage perfect independent movies.
McKay is best known for his work on ‘The Lego Batman Movie’ and its sequel. He has currently wrapped filming on his next project, the action-adventure ‘The Tomorrow War’ which stars Chris Pratt.
