It’s not often you hear about a stop motion feature-length film (Tim Burton’s upcoming Frankenweenie being the only other current one I can think of), much less an R-rated one, and by the sounds of it, Hell & Back is already shaping up very nicely.

Stand-up comedians and actors Nick Swardson and T.J. Miller will now be lending their voices for the film’s leading roles, Deadline report, in what will be,

“a comedy about two best friends who must rescue their pal when he is accidentally dragged to hell.”

The ShadowMachine film comes following the successes of Robot Chicken and Moral Orel that the production company have found with [adult swim]. Ross Schuman, who’s been a director on the latter and an art director on the former, will be co-directing alongside Tom Gianas, who’s worked in the past with the likes of Tenacious D and Cheech & Chong, and who directed and co-wrote the TV movie Gay Robot with Swardson.

Miller’s first role came a few years ago in none other than JJ Abrams’ Cloverfield – a pretty sweet claim to make – and has since starred in Mike Judge’s Extract and lent his voice to DreamWorks’ How To Train Your Dragon.

Swardson’s work is something I’m much more familiar with, having been a fan of his stand-up for a while now, and I’m definitely looking forward to hearing him voice this. A descent into hell to rescue his friend sounds pretty sweet to me. He was last seen alongside Danny McBride, Jesse Eisenberg, and Aziz Ansari in Ruben Fleischer’s 30 Minutes Or Less this year, in which he brilliantly played a reckless explosives enthusiast.

No word yet on when we can expect this, but with ShadowMachine looking to strengthen the successes they’ve already found on TV and move into the feature business as well, let’s hope we’ll have more news to bring you on this soon. I can’t wait to see how it turns out, and am fully expecting F-bombs and the like left, right, and centre.
