Hotly tipped to be heading to the Oscars, Ben Affleck’s Argo debuted as a surprise at Telluride earlier in the month, swiftly followed by its screening at TIFF last week, where it went down brilliantly – you can read our own review here.

Affleck returns once more behind the camera for his third feature, and after seeing the first TV spot for the film last week, an excellent second one has gone online ahead of its release in the US in just a few weeks’ time.

“Based on true events, Warner Bros. Pictures’ and GK Films’ dramatic thriller “Argo” chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis–the truth of which was unknown by the public for decades.”

Affleck stars as the expert exfiltrator in the lead, alongside a terrific cast headed up by Scoot McNairy, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Alan Arkin, Kyle Chandler, Taylor Schilling, Clea DuVall, and Tate Donovan.

The film is based on an astounding set of real-life events, with Chris Terrio adapting the original 2007 Wired article by Joshuah Bearman, How the CIA Used a Fake Sci-Fi Flick to Rescue Americans from Tehran, which you can, and definitely should, read here.

Argo will be released in the US on 12th October, followed by a UK release on 9th November. Having made such powerful films behind the camera with Gone Baby Gone and The Town, Affleck is proving himself an incredibly versatile talent in Hollywood, and his third effort is one of the strongest contenders as we head into the awards season later this year.
