Janie Jones, wearing its indie colours for all to see, finds Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine, Signs) being handed over to her utterly unaware and unprepared dad (Alessandro Nivola – Jurassic Park III, Face/Off) by her mum, Elizabeth Shue. When Shue goes into rehab, Breslin has nowhere to go and so travels with her dad’s band.

You can kind of guess the rest from there. Life lessons learned, connections made, issues brought to the surface and confronted, unexpected talent discovered and hurts mended. That’s not to say that it looks terrible, far from it. Breslin and Nivola are quietly affecting presences and the trailer below testifies, even if the poster looks awfully twee. Peter Stormare and Frank Whaley flesh out the cast.

This will be out in a few weeks’ time, though expect it to struggle to find much of a theatrical audience here in the UK. Which is a shame, for what looks like a fairly strong piece.

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
