Netflix has unveiled the first haunting images from ‘Frankenstein,’ Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s long-gestating passion project and a bold new take on Mary Shelley’s iconic novel.

Set to launch globally on the streaming platform in November 2025, the gothic reimagining promises a chilling, character-driven vision of the timeless tale of ambition, creation, and consequence.

Del Toro—whose darkly fantastical touch won him Oscars for ‘The Shape of Water’—directs from his own adaptation of Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, breathing new life into the tragic story of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but arrogant scientist who dares to defy nature by creating a living being from the dead. But as the first-look images suggest, this is no ordinary monster movie.

Starring Oscar Isaac as the tortured Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the Creature, the film’s ensemble also includes Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, David Bradley, Lars Mikkelsen, Christian Convery, with Charles Dance and Christoph Waltz rounding out the stellar cast.

The new stills showcase del Toro’s signature craftsmanship—opulent period settings, shadow-drenched laboratories, and the eerie beauty of the unnatural. Elordi’s Creature is teased only in glimpses, his appearance hidden in silhouette and shadow, promising a nuanced take on the misunderstood being at the heart of the horror. Isaac’s Frankenstein, meanwhile, is depicted as deeply consumed by obsession, his face illuminated by the glow of creation and destruction.

In true del Toro fashion, ‘Frankenstein’ is expected to blend emotional depth with genre spectacle, examining the loneliness of the outsider, the moral limits of science, and the terrible cost of unchecked ambition. With Mary Shelley’s timeless themes in hand and a powerhouse cast under his direction, del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ is shaping up to be one of 2025’s most anticipated cinematic events.
