Just as the leads are an unlikely pairing, the film has been co-directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who make their live-action debuts after the success of their first film, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
With only a few shorts weeks until its release, we’ve got a new clip from the film to share with you, courtesy of Yahoo Movies, seeing Tatum and Hill trying (and mostly failing) to enforce the law, and then Hill qualifies their success by terrifying the local bystanders.
“In the action-comedy 21 Jump Street, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are more than ready to leave their adolescent problems behind. Joining the police force and the secret Jump Street unit, they use their youthful appearances to go undercover in a local high school. As they trade in their guns and badges for backpacks, Schmidt and Jenko risk their lives to investigate a violent and dangerous drug ring. But they find that high school is nothing like they left it just a few years earlier and neither expects that they will have to confront the terror and anxiety of being a teenager again and all the issues they thought they had left behind.”
Along with Tatum and the Oscar-nominated Hill in the leads, the film also stars Ice Cube, Brie Larson, Dave Franco, Ellie Kemper, Rob Riggle, and a cameo from Mr. Johnny Depp himself, star of the original 1980s TV series.
Given that the script’s been co-written by Hill and Michael Bacall (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), I’d say there’s every reason to expect good things. And on top of that, Collider also report that Hill’s said that the studio’s given the go-ahead to start writing the script for the sequel:
“We are writing the sequel now, we got [the greenlight] by the studio to start writing the sequel.”
So they must have some faith in the project, and be hoping for a big success, which I think is definitely looking plausible. We’ve seen plenty promoting the film in recent months, and if it’s as good as it looks, it will almost certainly have word-of-mouth power pushing it to a strong take at the box office.
21 Jump Street will be with us in the UK and US on 16th March, so just over two weeks left until we can see what should be a great action-comedy on the big screen. For all our coverage of the film so far, you can click right here.
