Arrow season three is considered the weakest to date by fans despite the fact that Batman villain Ra’s al Ghul took on a starring role. It’s hoped that new big bad Damien Darhk will fare a little better, and it has today been revealed that Captain America: The First Avenger star Neal McDonough will play the villain.

It’s not clear what kind of role Darhk will play in the series at this point, though the final couple of episodes of season three did a great job of setting up a future appearance as well as his history with Ra’s al Ghul.

In the comic books, the villain was a major player in the criminal underworld and a member of H.I.V.E., the same organisation Arrow previously revealed was responsible for the murder of John Diggle’s brother.

McDonough made for a great baddie in Justified, and it should be a lot of fun to see what he brings to Arrow when the show returns this October. Asked last year about the character last year, the producers described him as “a mysterious and sophisticated villain, and an adversary of the late Ra’s Al Ghul. Now the leader of his own clandestine group, this cunning foe will prove to be one of the Arrow’s greatest challenges.”
