Tonight, the Internet has been buzzing with the news that we have more Star Wars on the way.

Disney has bought Lucasfilm for just north of $4bn., and are planning to have Star Wars Episode VII in theatres in 2015 – the same year, interestingly, as The Avengers 2 and Justice League.

Since that first, rather ground-breaking announcement, a conference call discussing the agreement has surfaced and is now playing on repeat online, along with a short video in which George Lucas himself says that he’s already written treatments for Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, as well as “a bunch of other movies,” confirming that if all goes well, we should have at least one more trilogy in the coming years.

The plan is to release the following instalments every other year, so we can expect Episode VIII in 2017, and Episode IX in 2019 – and where things go beyond there, only time will tell.

There’s also talk of expanding the already vast universe on the small screen, through Disney’s XD channel, so in all likelihood, we’ll have more series to look forward to in the coming years as well.

Kathleen Kennedy, who was recently announced as co-chair of Lucasfilm over the summer, has said that they’re currently in the process of sitting down with writers, and with Lucas’ treatment already in play, we’ll hopefully be hearing something more concrete in the months to come.

There’s still plenty that we don’t know, but everything we’ve been hearing tonight sounds like it has potential, coming completely out of left-field to surprise us all.

Star Wars Episode VII is now officially pencilled in for 2015. No word yet on exactly when, but with The Avengers 2 planting its flag in the spring, and Justice League having taken the summer, I wouldn’t be surprised if Star Wars will go the route of The Hobbit and put the film out as the last blockbuster of the year. More as we get it.
