Edda Magnason som Monica Z

Göteborg, Sweden – One of the year’s most anticipated films, Monica Z (also known as Waltz for Monica), made its Nordic premiere at Way Out West, a month before the theatrical release in cinemas across Sweden. From her simple life as a telephone operator in a small Swedish town, to becoming a national celebrity performing in jazz clubs in Stockholm and New York, the film chronicles the life of legendary Swedish jazz singer and actor, Monica Zetterlund. Monica played a major role in popularizing jazz in Scandinavia and beyond from the late 1950s. She was awarded a medal by the Swedish government for her contributions to the cultural life of Sweden.

Per Fly directs this fine biopic with the original script by Peter Birro. Fly’s film does a good job reproducing the style of each era portrayed in Monica Z.   Centering on Monica’s dramatic and often turbulent journey to stardom as the film emphasizes the typical trade-offs (failed relationships, insecurity, addictions and struggles with raising her daughter) that come with such a glamorous life.

Swedish/Icelandic musician and film actress, Edda Magnason, plays the leading role of Monica Zetterlund. Magnasan captures the beauty and spirit of Monica with her acting debut as the late jazz singer and even provides elegant vocals to Monica’s songs for the film’s soundtrack.

A talented artist with a unique presence, Monica Zetterlund, lived a life onstage, and another life behind the scenes. Well received at the Nordic premiere, the film seems to have a limited international release currently, so it may be difficult viewing it abroad. If there is an opportunity, however, Monica Z is an exceptional film that is worth a watch, and just as the popular Swedish singer, the film will continue to shine for a long time to come.
