Variety are reporting this morning that Halo Franchise Development Director Frank O’Connor has said that he is still very interested in bringing the gaming behemoth to the big screen. In the article, it is suggested that Microsoft are still considering script treatments from the likes of Alex Garland, Stuart Beattie, D.B. Weiss and Josh Olson for possible development.

“We’re still interested in making an excellent ‘Halo’ movie. We’ve created an awful lot of documentation and materials to support a feature film.”

While I’m not entirely convinced that having a few notes constituted continued development, the movie has refused to die since it was first touted as a credible possibility back in 2005. Indeed, O’Connor continues

“We have a good idea of what kind of story we want to tell, but won’t move on it until there’s a great reason to do it. We’re in no particular hurry.”

That story, should it ever make it off the page, will probably not be “a verbatim retelling of the game,” according to O’Connor, but a stand alone episode. With a TV incarnation also in the company’s sights, you can’t help but wonder whether the documentation and materials they speak of really just comprises a wish-list scribbled across a few post-it notes. Keeping in mind that the latest instalment of the game series is due to hit shelves on September 14th, this may just be another way of drawing attention to the franchise in time for Halo Reach’s approaching release.
