After word surfaced just last week that Haywire’s Gina Carano is set to join the next sequel in the re-energised The Fast and the Furious franchise, Fast Six, we’ve now got some more brilliant casting news to bring you.
Anyone who’s seen Fast Five (if you stayed for the mid-credits extra scene) will of course be expecting the first part, with Michelle Rodriguez now set to reprise her role as Letty, star of the first and fourth films (and seen in a photograph in the fifth, very much alive).
The film is not the only one in which she’ll be returning from the dead, as she’ll first be seen returning to the Resident Evil franchise this year in Resident Evil: Retribution, due out in the UK on 28th September. I’ve always been a big fan of hers – she plays Letty with seeming ease, perfectly embodying the role of, in the words of Dominic Toretto, 20% angel, 80% devil – and I’ve been looking forward to her return in Fast Six from the moment the final scene finished in Fast Five, so it’s great to have confirmation of her return. I can’t wait to see how they explain it.
And on top of Rodriguez’s official casting comes word that an offer is out to Luke Evans for the role of the villain in the sixth film. Evans has had a great few years, with leading roles in The Three Musketeers, Immortals, and The Raven, and is sure to have a good few more with the two parts of The Hobbit due out at the end of this year and next. Getting to see a dark side of him would be a lot of fun, and joining the increasingly brilliant cast of Fast Six sounds like a brilliant development for his career.
Justin Lin will be back behind the camera, directing from a Chris Morgan script once more, with (at the very least) Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Dwayne Johnson all expected to return, and hopefully alongside many more of the awesome characters from the earlier films too.
Fast Six (which will probably be titled The Fast and the Furious 6 in the UK) has already been set for release on 24th May, 2013 on both sides of the Atlantic, so now we’ve just got to wait a year until it reaches the big screen. Smart money says that it’s going to be one of the biggest blockbusters of next year, and it really can’t come fast enough for me (pun not intended).
