Michael B. Jordan is reportedly in early talks to star as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs in Joseph Kosinski’s highly anticipated big-screen reboot of ‘Miami Vice’ for Universal Pictures.
Based on the iconic 1980s TV series created by Anthony Yerkovich, ‘Miami Vice’ follows undercover detectives working the streets of South Florida. The original series, which starred Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Rico Tubbs, became a pop-culture phenomenon, celebrated for its neon-soaked visuals, fashion-forward aesthetic, and cutting-edge music.
According to the official logline, the new feature “explores the glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami” and is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.”

Kosinski — best known for helming ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘Tron: Legacy’ — is directing from a screenplay written by Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick, American Hustle) and Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler). The film is being produced by Kosinski and Dylan Clark (The Batman, War for the Planet of the Apes).
Universal Pictures first announced ‘Miami Vice’ in April, setting an official release date of August 6, 2027. Production is expected to begin next year, with the film being shot for IMAX — a format Kosinski has frequently embraced to elevate cinematic immersion and spectacle.
