In a recent fan Q&A to promote the release of Kingsman: The Secret Service on DVD and Blu-ray, Kick-Ass helmer Matthew Vaughn was asked if he’s no longer interested in that franchise after the second movie (which he didn’t write or direct) failed to make an impact at the box office or impress fans/critics in 2013.

Vaughn explained that despite those problems he’s “not happily done with the franchise,” and added: “We’re working on an idea for a prequel of how did Hit-Girl and Big Daddy become Hit-Girl and Big Daddy. If we make that, hopefully that will be the sorbet for the people that didn’t like ‘Kick-Ass 2’ and then we can go off and make ‘Kick-Ass 3.’ I think we’ve got to do this prequel to regain the love that we had with ‘Kick-Ass.’”

Mark Millar was quoted some time ago as saying that a Hit-Girl movie would be set in the far East with someone like The Raid’s Gareth Evans at the helm. That sounds great, but bringing Chloe Grace Moretz back would be an issue if it’s a prequel thanks to her age, and the pressure would be on for any filmmaker at the helm to make it a hit, especially if Vaughn and others would be hoping it restores faith in the franchise.

It will be interesting to see if it happens, though there are plenty of other great Mark Millar comics Hollywood should be adapting before another Kick-Ass. Find out our top ten choices by clicking here.
