Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington are set to reunite on Netflix feature film ‘Leave The World Behind’, an adaptation of a forthcoming novel by Rumaan Alam.
The story follows a husband and wife as they head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation with their teenage son and daughter. When the owners of the rental return in a panic one night after they say a sudden blackout has swept through the city, the couple aren’t sure what to believe.
With the TV and internet down and no cell service, the two families are forced into a tense living situation. Themes of race, class, and parenthood all come into play.
Roberts will play the mother of the family that rents the house. Washington will play the homeowner.
‘Mr. Robot’ and ‘Homecoming’ creator Sam Esmail will write and direct the adaptation, Roberts is producing through her Red Om Films banner; Denzel Washington is producing and so are Sam Esmail and Chad Hamilton through Esmail Corp. Alam will be executive producer.
Washington and Roberts had previously starred together in ‘The Pelican Brief’ and it’s reported they have long wanted to work together again. Esmail and Roberts also worked closely together on the first season of the Amazon drama series Homecoming, on which Esmail is co-creator exec producer and director.
