John-WilliamsHe’s helmed all six of the previous instalments, not to mention boasting credits that include some of the biggest and best known movies of all time, and now John Williams has officially been confirmed as the composer for the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII.

The news comes out of Star Wars Celebration Europe, and the film’s official site has released an interview with Williams on the confirmation of signing on to score the sequel.

With J.J. Abrams at the helm, there had been some speculation that Michael Giacchino might come on board for the franchise’s continuation/reboot, given that Giacchino has composed the scores for every film Abrams has directed.

And whilst a reunion with Giacchino for Star Wars Episode VII would almost certainly have led to another memorable score, it’s also understandable that the job would go to Williams. It is difficult, after all, to imagine a Star Wars film without a score from the legendary, five-time Oscar-winning composer.

Williams’ score for Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope won him his third Oscar, followed by a further two nominations for Episodes V and VI.

Given that 2015 has already got an amazing line-up on the film calendar, and one imagines that the likes of Giacchino, Hans Zimmer, Thomas Newman, James Newton Howard, Alexandre Desplat, and many more high-profile composers will be working on those films, it will be interesting to see if Williams earns another nomination, following the absence of nominations for Episodes I to III.

Abrams is set to direct from a script penned by Michael Arndt, with Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan serving as consultants.

Star Wars Episode VII is set to be released in 2015. All eyes will be on Disney’s D23 expo next month for some more news from the sequel, hopefully with the first official castings in place.
