JJ Abrams is nothing if not predictable. As inscrutable as ever, he has offered a few hints and comments regarding Super 8 and the Star Trek sequel without really saying anything at all.

While speaking with MTV, Abrams said a trailer would be out soon, though he didn’t know what it might reveal regarding what is actually going on. Great. So the trailer is out “soon” and he doesn’t know what it will contain. Appreciate that, JJ. Insightful as always.

I know, I know, we ought not to be surprised. There are suggestions that screen shots from the Super Bowl spot show that a full trailer should be with us on 11th March, but don’t be shocked if that trailer gives us very little else beyond what we already know. I think perhaps our frustrations at this teasing approach simply shows that we have become used to knowing everything way in advance and no longer expect to go along to see a film, not knowing what might happen. I remember seeing Terminator 2 at the cinema and knowing absolutely nothing about liquid metal T-1000’s, Arnie as a good, re-programmed T-800 and so on. Maybe it’s good for us to not get it all on a plate and have to wait to be surprised instead?

Abrams went on to talk about Star Trek 2 a little. All he said is that the sequel would move on from the characters meeting to look at what they do now they are a family. He is only currently confirmed as producer, not director and he hopes to see the script “very shortly”, when he will presumably decide whether or not to step behind the lens again. I would love it if he did, bringing as he did a much needed breath of fresh air and light-on-its-feet approach to Star Trek. We will see.
