MTV caught up with Jeremy Renner during the junket for his latest movie The Town, taking the opportunity to quiz him on all things Avengers.

Asked whether the actor, who was confirmed in the Hawkeye role back in July, would be donning the characters trademark purple costume, Renner declared:

“I think it’s going to be a little more reality-based… you can kind of tell with Scarlett [Johansson]’s character, it’s going to be more of a uniform . . . and not a big purple, comics sort of thing.”

Judging by Johansson’s turn as S.H.I.E.L.D agent Black Widow in Iron Man 2, Renner will instead be kitted out in nondescript black leather. Having brought up the actress, MTV questioned whether the relationship between the characters – prevalent in the comics -would make the leap to the big screen.

“We will [have a relationship], I think, in this one as well. We’re kind of a team, and what that relationship is, is still to be discovered.”

In the comics, Hawkeye (aka Clint Barton) is a master marksman who, despite an absence of superpowers, consistently holds his own against the Avengers with his trademark bow-and-arrow proficiency. The information gleaned so far suggests that the character will most resemble his Ultimates persona rather than his other – more outlandish – comic book manifestations, a translation Renner is more than happy with.

“That’s why I think it’s more palatable to audiences — there’s almost a sense of reality to these superheroes. That’s what makes it interesting to me, anyway.”

Colour me excited.
