Bloody Disgusting is reporting that none other than Jeremy Renner has been in close talks with director Breck Eisner to take on the Eastwood-esque tough guy character as portrayed by Kurt Russell in the original.

If cast he’ll be assigned the task of rescuing the President of the United States from the criminal hell-hole of Manhattan Island in a near future.

There was talk of Gerard Butler being cast when news was first announced about a possible remake a couple of years back, but Renner seems like a solid choice here, although he’s a busy man at the moment (as well as currently filming for a co-starring role in the next Mission: Impossible instalment, he also has The Avengers on the cards).

Sounds like Renner could do with an escape himself when he’s through playing all these characters.
