Word came back in June that the sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, entitled The Wolverine, had finally found its director in James Mangold, director of such films as 3:10 To Yuma, Walk The Line, and Girl, Interrupted.

Mangold has now lined up his follow-up to The Wolverine, Deadline report, attaching himself to a remake of this year’s Iceland crime thriller, City State.

The original is directed and co-written by Olaf de Fleur Johannesson, and,

“is set in the Icelandic underworld and deals with four people whose lives intersect when a foreign mafia decides to take control of the Icelandic drug market. There is a crooked police captain in love with a prostitute, an aging crime boss with a heart condition looking to get out of the game alive, a mechanic determined to avenge the death of his unborn child, and a female cop who is attacked by thugs and takes matters into her own hands.”

That premise of the original Icelandic City State sounds pretty damn immense to me. The trailer, which I’ve embedded below, only furthers that immensity, and it definitely looks like a film worth hunting down. From what I can tell, the original itself isn’t actually out in Iceland yet, so we’ve probably got a while to wait until we’ll be able to see it.

Mangold will of course be busy with The Wolverine for the foreseeable future, with principal photography possibly pushed back to spring 2012, but hopefully he’ll be free to get moving on City State straight afterwards, because it sounds like a pretty epic film to me, and Mangold has shown that he’s capable of a lot.

Here’s the trailer for the original City State to enjoy.
