After enduring more than 70 years of jokes about wearing his pants on the outside, a number of new set photos from Zack Synder’s forthcoming Superman: Man of Steel have revealed further details on the costume that Henry Cavill will be wearing for Supes’ latest big-screen outing – and to the shock of many long-standing fans he’s sans the old red speedos.

Pants aside, this latest round of pictures give us a far better look at some of the costume’s finer details than the official shot that was released at the beginning of August. Without the familiar cape in place – that’s been removed between takes – one of the most obvious aspects of the costume is the texture covering not only the main body of the suit but also the ‘S’ shield; it’s not unlike the sort of detailing seen on Andrew Garfield’s costume for The Amazing Spider-Man. Elsewhere, there’s some unusual ribbed sections at the wrists and on the sides that extend down the thighs; it’s a somewhat different look for the Man of Steel than we are used to, but an interesting one nonetheless.

And while I might be pulling some red pants on over my trousers in a slightly odd, one-man protest, it’s worth bearing in mind that Cavill’s costume has much in common with the new-look Superman appearing in DC’s comprehensive comic book relaunch that’s happening right around now (and which can be seen on DC’s homepage). That being the case it makes sense that as the appearance of the most iconic of all superheroes is updated for the funny books, it’s also updated for the silver screen.
