Colin TrevorrowOne of the biggest pieces of news to rock the shores of the Internet in recent memory has of course been the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney (for a tidy sum of $4.05bn.), and the news that the latter are aiming to put Star Wars Episode VII into cinemas in 2015 as the start of a new trilogy.

Soon after the original announcement was made, we heard our first rumour rumblings that Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class) is in talks to take the director’s chair, for what is no doubt one of the most coveted jobs in Hollywood right now.

Rumours are sure to abound aplenty in the coming months, and with the rumour mill now officially spinning, Celebuzz (via CBM) are reporting that Colin Trevorrow, the brilliant director who made his debut this year with Safety Not Guaranteed, has met with Lucas and is a potential candidate for the job, too:

“Trevorrow is indeed on the list of potential names that could shepherd a new trilogy of films.”

According to their source, Trevorrow met with George Lucas himself a few months back, having impressed the latter with his feature debut.

I’m a huge fan of Trevorrow’s Safety Not Guaranteed, which has just been released on DVD and Blu-ray in the US, and will be released in cinemas in the UK on Boxing Day, and handing the director the keys to Episode VII would definitely be an interesting choice.

Over the summer, we heard that Trevorrow will be reuniting with writer Derek Connolly, who penned Safety Not Guaranteed, for another sci-fi/comedy, The Ambassador. If this rumour is indeed true, I’m hoping that the pair will have enough time to make that film before anything happens with Episode VII, because as much as I’m interested to see what a new trilogy would bring, I loved Safety Not Guaranteed so much, and I’d love to see what a second film from the duo would bring even more.

Like Vaughn, this is likely to remain unconfirmed for the time being, and simply something to speculate about. If you’ve seen Trevorrow’s debut already this year, let us know what you think of giving him the job in the comments below.
