It’s a sign of the times when your trailer makes a comment on the nature of movie marketing. So we have Jeff Goldblum quipping about the destruction of landmarks while London in particular is torn apart by the return of the aliens who arrived twenty years ago.

What this new trailer shows off is that there will be many of the previous films’ beats with the absence of Will Smith’s character clearly making its way into the plot at some point. But other than that it’s more of the same – cities, destruction, rinse and repeat.

The film is directed by disaster master Roland Emmerich and stars Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Joey King, William Fichtner.
