As the dust settles after another crazy summer of films, the aftermath of what did and didn’t go to plan for the studios will soon come into focus. Flops and disappointments were certainly more prominent than they have been for a long time, with this summer standing as the worst attended since 1992 in the US.

And yet, there has been a saviour right at the beginning of the fall season there has been a saviour with the unprecedented success last weekend of the new adaptation of Stephen King’s IT which has broken multiple box office records since it debuted on last Friday with a whopping 3million opening weekend and has already passed the 0million worldwide mark – some feat.

But while one King adaptation is raking it in, another fell foul of the poor summer attendance in the form of The Dark Tower. Years in the making, the film opened in August and faced mostly negative reviews and has grossed only $49million in the US thus far, not the numbers Sony would have hoped for given their want to kick-start a new franchise of both films and television series.

So what does the future hold for The Dark Tower? Well, whilst promoting two new films at the Toronto International Film Festival, star Idris Elba has given his two cents to Mashable about what might happen next but he says he isn’t sure what the next steps are, saying:

“I don’t actually know, if I’m really honest. I do know about the TV series and I’m not sure where we are with that, but I couldn’t tell you what’s going to happen next. As you know the film was sort of mixed reviews, and some loved it and I think some hated it, so who knows.”

“Ultimately, everyone has an opinion and that’s okay. But I’d imagine with a film like The Dark Tower—if you know anything about the literature—it’s a very hard book to digest, and it’s definitely a hard book to adapt. Until one of the reviewers that had something to say adapts it and does a great job, well I don’t want to hear what they have to say.”

The Dark Tower is in cinemas now.
