With Disney bringing back live-action retellings of Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson, Emily Blunt about to start her watch as Mary Poppins and Jon Favreau finishing up The Jungle Book before taking on The Lion King there’s a constant stream of news regarding the state of Disney’s re-invigoration of their back catalogue.

Today some slightly left-field news comes in regarding their 1992 animated take on Aladdin, and the man who Disney have tasked with retelling the story. Guy Ritchie, whose Sherlock Holmes films were a fun second act to his filmmaking career following the much enjoyed Lock Stock era, is set to direct the new take on an old tale.

Currently finishing off production on his King Arthur film, Ritchie will direct John August’s script which, according to THR, will keep the musical moments from the beloved animated version.

Quite how they’ll portray the Genie following Robin Williams’ iconic performance will be interesting to see.

So, more Aladdin – excited?
