Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim was not the commercial success that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures hoped for last year, with only $400 million at the worldwide box office from a budget rumoured to be upwards of $200 – $250 million. However, that was clearly enough, as a sequel has now been confirmed for a 2017 release.

Distributed by Universal Pictures (who Legendary are now paired with since splitting from Warner Bros.), it will actually be released in  3D and IMAX 3D on April 7th, 2017.

That may sound like a long wait, but in the announcement video below, director Guillermo del Toro – who will return to also helm the follow-up – confirms that they are also working on continuing both the comic book tie-ins and a new animated series which will fill in the gaps between the two movies.

Zak Penn (Elektra) will write the script with del Toro, and Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni once again produce alongside del Toro, Mary Parent and Callum Greene.

Pacific Rim divided a lot of critics and moviegoers, but like a lot of del Toro’s films, it’s gained a pretty large following since being released. Whether they’ll work on cutting the CGI-heavy movie’s budget to account for the low return of the last movie remains to be seen, but the sequel could potentially be even bigger!

Are you looking forward to seeing the Pacific Rim sequel?
