With Marvel launching their anticipated Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. last week, it seems like a fitting time for Warner Bros. to announce that Fox has acquired Gotham, a new origin drama telling the story of Commission Gordon from the world of Batman.

Deadline reports that the deal comes after a heated bidding war, involving a series commitment from Fox, who acquired the rights from Warner Bros. TV and Bruno Heller, creator of The Mentalist.

The series will explore the origin stories of Commission James Gordon and the villains who made Gotham City famous (or infamous). Gordon will be a detective with the Gotham City Police Department, and he’ll be yet to meet Batman, who won’t be part of the series.

The character has arguably become synonymous in recent years with Gary Oldman’s portrayal of him in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy, and it will of course be very interesting to see who will be cast in the leading role. As of yet, there’s no word on that front, but hopefully that will be changing soon.

The announcement is the second for Warner Bros. TV and DC in almost as many weeks, with word recently arriving that Grant Gustin has been cast as Barry Allen / The Flash for The CW’s Arrow, which will include a backdoor pilot episode that will act as the potential Flash spin-off.

With any luck, Warner Bros. and Fox will follow suit soon by revealing who’s going to be running point as Gordon for Gotham.
