We weren’t invited to see the Tron Legacy trailer which everyone is talking about, but we’re still looking forward to Disney’s revisiting of their 1982 world of electronic gladiators.

I was very impressed with the test footage shown before my screening of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, and the enduring imagery of Tron still holds up and has not dated one bit, very impressed for a twenty eight year old film, and the 3D worked incredibly well.

After viewing the new Tron Legacy trailer Peter Sciretta from /Film and Alex Billington from FirstShowing spoke to director Joe Kosinski and a few interesting snippets of information which point to a very interesting direction for this film.

As the title of the post suggests they learned that five sequences of Tron Legacy will be displayed in 1.7:1 aspect ratio, while the rest of the film will be in the usual anamorphic widescreen 2.35:1 ratio, the two believe that Kosinski is pushing for the biggest ratio they can for those five sequences and champion the director’s vision for this movie.

If you were lucky enough to see The Dark Knight in the IMAX cinema (and unlucky enough to see Transformers 2 there too) then you’ll be familiar with the sudden shift between the aspect ratios and the disappearance of the big black bars when the sequences shot specially for the IMAX came on screen. It is a dizzying effect, and should elevate the 3D immersion for these moments.

FirstShowing also picked on the fact that a Wizard of OZ style bookend between the real world (2D) and the computer environment (3D) will be on the cards. All points to us getting very excited about this film before its December 2010 release.
