Ricky Gervais, one of the few British comedians to be well-known on both sides of the Atlantic, is returning with a new show next week on Channel 4, entitled ‘Derek’.

Written and directed by Gervais, Derek will star Gervais in the titular role, supported by Karl Pilkington (An Idiot Abroad) as his friend and landlord Dougie, David Earl (Cemetery Junction) as Kev, and Kerry Godliman (Extras) as Hannah.

“Derek Noakes is a tender, innocent man whose love for his job and the people he cares for shines through.

He’s 49, adores animals, Rolf Harris, Jesus, Deal or No Deal, Million Pound Drop and Britain’s Got Talent – but his main hobby is autograph hunting.

Derek works in a retirement home with his mate and landlord, Dougie. Derek cares deeply for old people because they’re kind and funny and tell him stories about the olden days.

Hannah is a care worker at the home and is Derek’s best friend. She’s smart, witty and hard-working, but unlucky in love, and, like Derek, always puts other people first.”

Being described as a comedy drama, Derek will air at 10pm next Thursday, 12th April, on Channel 4 here in the UK. Apparently it’s just a one-off , but if it gets a strong enough (positive) reaction, there could well be more of Derek to look forward to in the future. For now, the first trailers and outtakes all rolled into one.
