The third season of Homeland was met with a mixed response for a number of reasons, with critics and viewers slamming the focus on Brody’s annoying daughter, some inexplicable plot twists, and the final fate of one of the show’s leading characters. Whether ratings will take a dip when the series returns remains to be seen.

Showrunner Alex Gansa is well aware of such complaints and admitted at Showtime’s Television Critics Association panel that it especially “hurt” to see Homeland snubbed when the nominations for the 2014 Emmy’s were released. “I don’t know how you can look at the last episodes of the season, especially the last two episodes [and not believe] they are the best we’ve ever done. But we’re going to get back on the mountain again.”

Gansa went on to “guarantee” that Dana Brody won’t return in season four of Homeland, and then revealed some new plot details. When we pick up with Carrie, her bipolar illness will have stabilized and in her new Middle Eastern setting (Pakistan) will be on the hunt for, “someone who she’s recruiting and trying to get his trust.”

He added that this season will further develop the character of Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) and that we’ll see Saul (Mandy Patinkin) moving into the private sector in the contracting business.

Below, you can see the first trailer for season four of Homeland (featuring plenty of new footage from the series), along with a brand new poster which reveals the show’s US return date.
