Oscar-nominated writer-director Lee Daniels made a huge impression with his sophomore effort, Precious, back in 2009, and now he returns with his third film, The Paperboy, with a very impressive cast headed up by Matthew McConaughey, Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman, and John Cusack.

The film debuted at Cannes earlier this year to mixed reviews (you can read our own review here), but I maintain optimism that the film will be excellent when it comes out later this year. The first trailer has now debuted over at Yahoo Movies, giving us our first look at the film.

“A directionless young man helps his reporter brother investigate the possible wrongful conviction of a man on death row, and in the process, falls for the woman whom the convict has been romancing through prison correspondence.”

Daniels is behind the camera, directing from a script he co-wrote with the author of the original novel, Peter Dexter. And starring alongside the leading quartet will be David Oyelowo, Scott Glenn, Nikolette Noel, and Camille Balsamo.

The Paperboy will be released in US theatres on 5th October. As yet, we don’t have a UK release date, but hopefully we’ll see it before year’s end, too. McConaughey has been doing a great job of diversifying his career in recent years, and this looks to be continuing that trend nicely.
