Having made his first appearance on the big screen this year since 2008’s Seven Pounds with Men in Black 3, Will Smith will be back for more next summer alongside son Jaden Smith in M. Night Shyamalan’s next big sci-fi epic, After Earth.

We heard late last week that Sony intend to build a universe around the film, including novels, digital shorts, and a single-issue comic leading up to its release next summer, and the first promo video has hit the web as part of that introduction.

“After Earth is set 1000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.”

Shyamalan is directing from a script by Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) with a polish by Oscar-winner Stephen Gaghan (Traffic), and I think a lot of people are expecting a return to greatness with this next venture from the director.

After Earth is due out on 7th June, 2013 in the UK and US, and you can be sure this is just the first step in what will be a massive ad campaign from Sony in the course of the next eleven months. For now, here’s your entry into the After Earth universe.
