Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia, There Will Be Blood) returns this autumn with The Master, and with this writer-director’s track record, it’s understandable that it’s one of the most highly anticipated films of the year.

We’ve seen some very interesting teasers from the film in recent months, and now the Huffington Post have got the first look at its poster.

“Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Paul Thomas Anderson (the acclaimed director of, There Will Be Blood, Magnolia and Boogie Nights), this story stars Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) and Academy Award-nominee Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line). Set in America in the years following World War II, a charismatic intellectual (Hoffman) launches a faith-based organization and taps a young drifter (Phoenix) as his right-hand man. But as the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the onetime vagabond finds himself questioning the belief system he has embraced, and his mentor. A truly one-of-a-kind drama, which promises magnetic virtuoso performances, the film marks the fifth collaboration between Anderson and Hoffman, following Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch Drunk Love.”

Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix star in the lead, with support from the brilliant Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons, and David Warshovsky, and music coming from Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood (There Will Be Blood, We Need to Talk About Kevin).

Anderson himself has five Oscar nominations to his name, and with The Weinstein Company setting this loose in mid-autumn over in America, there’s a good chance that he and the cast will be heading to the Academy Awards early next year.

The Master will be released in the US on 12th October, followed by a UK release on 9th November. Set that date to memory, because we all know this is going to be brilliant. As usual with this first poster, you can click to enlarge.
