When you have a director going by the name ‘Bobcat’, you instantly get the sense that there’s something pretty excellent about the man, and undoubtedly the same can be said for his work.
The first poster for Bobcat Goldthwait’s next film, God Bless America, has landed courtesy of HitFix, and the film has just had its world premiere this weekend at the Toronto Film Festival.
Goldthwait’s last feature, World’s Greatest Dad, is one that I unfortunately missed when it came out a couple of years back, but I have heard great things of it, and great things of Robin Williams in the lead role. ‘Great things’ aren’t necessarily something you often hear of when there’s mention of Robin Williams in new roles these days, so Goldthwait has clearly been doing something right. He’s also recently directed about half of Demetri Martin’s TV series, Important Things with Demetri Martin, which is brilliant, so his next project, God Bless America, must be something to look forward to.
The film sounds very much like black comedy/drama, and black comedy done well is one of my favourite film (sub-)genres.
“Loveless, jobless, possibly terminally ill, Frank (Joel Murray) has had enough of the downward spiral of America. With nothing left to lose, Frank takes his gun and offs the stupidest, cruelest, and most repellent members of society. He finds an unusual accomplice: 16-year old Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr), who shares his sense of rage and disenfranchisement.”
There’s no word on a release date yet, here or across the Atlantic, but hopefully it will have done well at Toronto over the weekend, and we’ll get some news on release dates in the near future. Without further ado, here’s the film’s first poster. As usual, click to enlarge.
