Joss Whedon’s The Avengers stormed the box office back in the spring this year, and left records in its wake to become the third-highest-grossing film of all time, with the biggest opening weekend ever.

The film will be making its way to DVD and Blu-ray this September, and ahead of its release, the first of the two post-credits scenes has made its way online.

*Spoiler Alert: If you’re yet to see the film, this is your warning to stop reading now*

This scene was of course of great interest, wildly teasing what we can look forward to in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and most likely in The Avengers 2.

Following their announcement at Comic-Con, Marvel’s current line-up officially includes Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World in 2013, followed by Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, with talk of Ant-Man making his big-screen debut that year as well.

Early reports on the Guardians of the Galaxy film suggested that Thanos, seen here in this post-credits scene, is expected to be part of that film as well as The Avengers 2. Given how important past post-credit scenes have been (Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk were, in a way, setting up The Avengers; Iron Man 2 teased Thor; and Thor and Captain America both teased The Avengers), we can’t wait to see how important Thanos becomes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the years to come.

The Avengers (known as ‘Avengers Assemble’ in the UK) will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and Blu-ray 3D on 17th September here in the UK, followed by the 25th September in the US.
