The Sweeney posterNick Love, well known for writing and directing the likes of The Football Factory and The Firm, is back behind the camera with The Sweeney, based on the original UK ’70s TV programme of the same name.

Ray Winstone and Ben Drew (a.k.a. Plan B) take the lead, with the ever-rising talents of Hayley Atwell and Damian Lewis supporting.

The first trailer made its way online early last month, and now the film’s official Facebook has debuted the first official poster (succeeding the white/blue promo poster that surfaced a while back), and it gets the image of the film across nicely.

I also enjoy that the official website (which currently redirects to Facebook) is www.yourenicked.com. Classic.

“Based on the original ITV cult classic TV show, THE SWEENEY will be a modernization of the London Flying Squad, directed by Nick Love (THE FOOTBALL FACTORY, THE FIRM) and co-written by Bafta Winner John Hodge (TRAINSPOTTING).

Set in present day England, THE SWEENEY will be packed full of fast cars, action and wise cracks as it follows Flying Squad detectives Jack Regan, (originally played John Thaw,) George Carter (original played by Dennis Waterman) and their team, as they work to keep the bad guys down!”

The Oscar-nominated John Hodge (Trainspotting, The Beach) co-wrote the script with Love, as part of a Vertigo Films and Embargo Films co-production (who are also bringing us the Pusher remake later this year).

Drew, who’s previously starred in Noel Clarke’s Adulthood and 4.3.2.1., will also be making his writing and directorial debut next month with the release of his feature-length film, iLL Manors, and you can head over to the official site to see more about that here.

The Sweeney will be released on 12th September here in the UK, and no word yet about if/when it will head across the Atlantic for a US release. For now, enjoy Drew and Winstone looking, as ever, tougher than coffin nails. As usual, you can click to enlarge.
