Following the success of Iron Man 3 (still the only solo Marvel movie to gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office), Shane Black could have said yes to pretty much any big movie franchise, but the filmmaker is instead returning to his Noir roots with The Nice Guys. It’s an area Black is all too familiar with after helming Kiss Kiss Bang Bang over a decade ago.

The Nice Guys revolves around Ryan Gosling’s down on his luck detective and Russell Crowe as hired muscle, a rather unique pair who are teamed up to track down a missing girl and deal with the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star; their investigation eventually leads them to discover an even greater conspiracy revolving around some sort of corruption.

“Whether this thing is a comedy with action or a thriller with jokes, one thing that’s very clear is these two are extremely funny, ” Black said of Gosling and Crowe’s chemistry. “People will enjoy seeing the two of them.” As for the direction of The Nice Guys, he added: “It’s an R-rated film and it’s a caper. It’s a little fast, a little funny and a little rough in places, kind of coarse. These guys are working-class dudes, they’re not really sophisticated private detectives, so it’s a chance to do the kind of thriller I don’t see too much of anymore.”

The Nice Guys is set to be released next May, and you can see the first image below!
