Gary Oldman in LawlessJohn Hillcoat’s Lawless is less than three months from its big screen debut, and the buzz has been increasing all the more since its premiere at Cannes last month – you can read our own review here.

The awesome first trailer hit the web a month ago, giving us a look at all the main players, followed by seven great character posters and two clips last month, and now the first (non-poster) image of Gary Oldman has made its way online.

The all-star cast is headed up by Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, and Jason Clarke as the three protagonist brothers, alongside Hardy, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, Dane DeHaan, and Noah Taylor.

“LAWLESS is the true story of the infamous Bondurant Brothers: bootlegging siblings who made a run for the American Dream in Prohibition-era Virginia. In this epic gangster tale, inspired by true-life tales of author Matt Bondurant’s family in his novel “The Wettest County in the World”, the loyalty of three brothers is put to the test against the backdrop of the nation’s most notorious crime wave.”

Nick Cave, who penned Hillcoat’s The Proposition, has adapted the original novel by Matt Bondurant, The Wettest County in the World – which was initially to the film’s name, then shortened to The Wettest County, then changed altogether to Lawless.

Lawless will be released by The Weinstein Company on 29th August in the US before its 7th September release here in the UK. If the date wasn’t already committed to memory, I’d recommend doing so now. It’s of course early days to be talking about Oscars, but we all know the talk begins well in advance, and TWC are known for picking up films they think will be contenders, and this could definitely be one of them. As usual with this new image, you can click to enlarge.
