The BBC has tonight released the first full-length trailer for the Sherlock Christmas special which will take place in Victorian England, the time period which is of course most closely associated with the iconic detective. As you can see, both Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are back (before they each go on to star in Marvel movies; Captain America: Civil War in the latter’s case and Doctor Strange for the former), but a little different to usual!

“The special is its own thing,” Steven Moffat confirmed earlier this year, making it clear that the episode won’t drastically change the format of Sherlock moving forwards. It also won’t tie into the events of the actual series because, “we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It’s kind of in its own little bubble.”

The fact that this episode of Sherlock is going to be standalone obviously means that they’re going to have a lot more creative freedom to have fun with the Victorian setting, and the trailer below points to it being a classic adventure for the duo (albeit with the cast members from the present day set series we’ve all grown to know and love over the past few years).

There’s been talk of the special receiving a release in cinemas, but we’ve yet to hear anything concrete on that. For now, check out the new trailer for Sherlock below…
