The prolific Xavier Dolan returned to Cannes last year with a stunner in tow. Following Tom at the Farm, his divisive film of the previous year, with a smart-mouthed Oedipal drama was a smart move and the lengthy standing ovation and Cannes Jury Prize was testament to this.

It was one of the few films from 2014’s festival to which we awarded full marks, and Dolan’s playfulness with aspect ratios and the nebulous nature of the relationship between the titular mother and her violent son is deftly handled.

It’s a must-see and this is the poster to look out for before it hits UK cinemas on the 20th of March after making an appearance at the Glasgow Film Festival in a few weeks.
