Oscar-nominated Spanish writer-director Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes) is making his English language debut with Open Windows, and production is officially now underway with Elijah Wood and Sasha Grey boarding in the leading roles.

The high-tech suspense thriller will unfold in real-time, with the film itself following the action through the screen on a laptop connected to the Internet.

Wood will star as the protagonist, desperately searching for an actress (Grey), who has been abducted by the vicious villain, Chord (Neil Maskell).

Vigalondo has been developing the project for the past three years, and is directing from his own script. Shooting has begun this week on a high-security set in Madrid – with all the possible viral marketing possibilities spinning out of this one, it will no doubt be kept very much under wraps until the campaign kicks off, hopefully not long into the New Year.

Wood is likely best known for his role as Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings – a role which he’ll be reprising next month in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – but has shown throughout his career his love of horror and similar genre films, and it’s always nice to see a big Hollywood name working in genres like that.

Perhaps best known for her work in the adult film industry, Grey has been making a great name for herself since Steven Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience, and was brilliant in her arc in HBO’s Entourage. With roles in the upcoming Would You Rather and The Scribbler, I can’t wait to see more of her on the big screen.

Open Windows will be launched by Wild Bunch at the American Film Market, and here’s to hoping it will smoothly secure distribution in international territories the world over, because with a leading cast like Wood and Grey, and a renowned director like Vigalondo making his English language debut, there’s a lot to be excited about.
