Edgar Ramirez

It was recently revealed that Olympus Has Fallen star Gerard Butler had decided to drop out of the upcoming Point Break remake due to a combination of creative differences and scheduling issues.

Alcon Entertainment said at the time that they would start looking for a replacement immediately, and according to a press release sent out today, it has now been confirmed that they’ve chosen Edgar Ramirez for what they describe as a “re-creation” of the classic 1991 Point Break which was directed by Kathryn Bigelow.

Ramirez will play Brodhi, the character made famous by Patrick Swayze in the original Point Break. Ericson Core (Invincible) is directing from a screenplay by Kurt Wimmer (Salt, Law Abiding Citizen).

The actor most recently finished working on Hands of Stone, the Roberto Duran biopic in which he plays the title character, starring opposite Robert DeNiro. He also won awards for taking on the lead role in Olivier Assayas’ CARLOS, and made an appearance in performance in Zero Dark Thirty.

Luke Bracey is still attached to play hotshot FBI agent Johnny Utah, a character originally played by Keanu Reeves. There’s no synopsis for Point Break as of yet, although it was described earlier this year as focusing on Brodhi, an expert extreme-sports athlete who seeks nirvana through the conquest of a series of athletic feats such as surfing 100-foot waves. He saves Johnny Utah, the undercover FBI agent, and brings him into the fold of international criminals.
