It’s the news all Descendants fans have been wishing for, the Disney Channel has officially announced a third movie in the Descendants franchise will be coming to the channel.

Disney has been leaving clues all over social media for the loyal fans of the saga – which saw the second movie reach more than 71.5 million viewers – that a third movie could be in the works with pre-production taking place in Vancouver.

Reprising their roles are: Dove Cameron as Mal, Cameron Boyce as Carlos, Sofia Carson as Evie, Booboo Stewart as Jay, Mitchell Hope as King Ben and China Anne McClain as Uma. Additional casting for Descendants 3 will be announced at a later date.

Emmy Award and DGA Award-winning director Kenny Ortega (Descendants, High School Musical trilogy) takes the helm as well as serving as producer and choreographer.

In the announcement video – which you can view below – which features Mal (daughter of Maleficent), alluding to a new villain character — Mal’s father.

Music videos from Descendants and Descendants 2 have nearly two billion global views and the Descendants 2 soundtrack was the #1 album on iTunes and in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. More than three million Descendants and Descendants 2 dolls have been sold, and more than four million Descendants-related books have been sold including three popular young adult novels that were featured on the New York Times Best Sellers List.

Production on Descendants 3 is due to start in the summer and will head to the channel new year.
