Andy-Serkis-as-Caesar-in-Dawn-of-the-Planet-of-the-ApesWith production well underway on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Fox were able to treat audiences out in San Diego over the weekend to the first footage from the film.

As much as we’d love to be able to say that footage has surfaced, we’ve probably got a little while longer to wait before the first teaser trailer lands online. But in the meantime, the studio have released the first official image from the film, giving us a look at Andy Serkis reprising his role as Caesar, dressed in war paint here and ready for battle.

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

Serkis is joined by a terrific cast, headed up by Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Judy Greer, Gary Oldman, Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Enrique Murciano, and Kirk Acevedo.

Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) is in the director’s chair this time around, with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver penning the script, and Scott Z. Burns and Mark Bomback lending their hand on rewrites.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be heading into cinemas on July 18th, 2014, a little later than we’d previously been expecting it. And if you’d like to know what’s been happening in the time between Rise and Dawn, then you can check out the free online version of Before the Dawn, a graphic novel given out at Comic-Con.
