Deadline are reporting that the remake of Fantastic Voyage, which is being produced by James Cameron, now has a director on board – Clash of the Titans’ Louis Leterrier.

This is an interesting choice as although Leterrier’s remake of the 1981 Greek fantasy has made a ton of many for Warner Bros., the shoddy 3D work in the film has been heavily criticised. Studio politics must have played a big part in the decision to upgrade from a 2D conversion, and Leterrier must be eager to take on a project where he can call the shots using the 3D process in the shooting stage.

If there was ever a remake which would be perfectly suited to being shot in the 3D format it’s this one. The original story involved a team of scientists who are shrunk into a ship which travels around the insides of one of their colleagues in an attempt to save his life.

Cameron’s uncredited script collaborator on Avatar, Laeta Kalogridis, is reportedly involved in some script work on this feature, and with the added advantage of having Cameron’s expertise in the world of 3D at his disposal, Leterrier could be on to both a critical and box office winner here.
