Cars received a slightly lukewarm reception from the critics on its release. The animation was, as always with Pixar, both flawless and peerless and the nostalgia for an age when one would drive on the open highway for the sheer pleasure of it was heart-warming and affecting. Yet somehow, it didn’t seem to mesh into as satisfying an overall film as much of the rest of Pixar’s output.

However, given what a personal project it was for Pixar head-honcho John Lasseter and also given the film’s not inconsiderable worldwide box-office haul of $450m, we now have an upcoming sequel, Cars 2, due for release in the summer of 2011.

We gave you some concept art and a synopsis earlier this year and now we have more concept art and a teaser trailer for you to feast your eyes on. Predictably, the teaser doesn’t tell us too much, other than to confirm that Lightning McQueen and Mater will indeed find themselves caught up in spy-style hi-jinks, but given that Pixar have yet to make a film that comes close to mediocre and for the most part produce animated films of the very highest calibre, we should remain cautiously hopeful for good things.

So what do you think? Keen for more Cars? Prefer to see more original Pixar material? Please comment below.

Thanks to Cinema Blend for the art.

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
