Captain-Phillips-PosterPaul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips might be getting its official world premiere this time next week at the New York Film Festival, but Dave has already been privy to an early screening, and our five-star review would definitely suggest that the film’s going to be an Oscar heavyweight in the months to come.

Based on real events, Tom Hanks takes centre stage in the action/drama as the eponymous Captain Phillips, whose ship was hijacked back in 2009 by Somali pirates. The latest trailer landed just over a month ago, and with just a few more weeks before it touches down in US cinemas, Sony has released a new TV spot.

Columbia Pictures’ action-thriller Captain Phillips stars two-time Oscar® winner Tom Hanks in the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.

The film is directed by Oscar® nominee Paul Greengrass, from a screenplay by Billy Ray and based upon the book, A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea, by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty. The film is produced by Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, and Michael De Luca.

Catherine Keener, Max Martini, Barkhad Abdi, Faysal Ahmed, Mahat M. Ali, Michael Chernus, and David Warshofsky complete the cast alongside Hanks.

Greengrass (Green Zone, The Bourne Ultimatum) is directing from a script penned by Billy Ray, who adapts the book, A Captain’s Duty, by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty.

Captain Phillips will be released in the US on October 11th, with its UK release date set for 18th October, following its appearance as the Opening Night Film at the BFI London Film Festival.
