Fresh from its official bow at the NYFF over the weekend, Paul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips is just a few weeks out from landing in cinemas, and all the early signs point to this being a big awards contender and an adrenaline-fuelled blockbuster for Sony.

Dave was fortunate to see the film early – you can read our five-star review here – cementing the faith that this is going to be something that has everyone talking in the coming weeks and months. And as if it wasn’t on everyone’s radar already, Sony screened a new trailer / two-minute preview of the film during last night’s Breaking Bad finale.

Columbia Pictures’ action-thriller Captain Phillips stars two-time Oscar® winner Tom Hanks in the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.

The film is directed by Oscar® nominee Paul Greengrass, from a screenplay by Billy Ray and based upon the book, A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea, by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty. The film is produced by Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, and Michael De Luca.

Tom Hanks is of course front and centre as the eponymous Captain Phillips, with Catherine Keener, Max Martini, Barkhad Abdi, Faysal Ahmed, Mahat M. Ali, Michael Chernus, and David Warshofsky starring alongside him.

Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum) is directing from a script penned by Billy Ray, adapting the book, A Captain’s Duty, by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty.

Captain Phillips will be released in the US on October 11th, and will arrive in the UK a week later on 18th October, following its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.
