The British Independent Film Awards is one of our favourite events of the year, and it’s edging ever closer – and we know that because we were present at the nominations announcement in central London this week. Presented by last year’s Most Promising Newcomer recipient Hayley Squires, and Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams, after they revealed the fortunate nominees this year, we spoke to the pair to discuss the encouraging female presence – which the pair agreed has given them a great of inspiration.

Meanwhile they speak about the importance of celebrating British independent cinema, and just how high the quality is, yet again, in this year’s nominations. Squires also tells us what a year it’s been for her off the back of last year’s success, and we ask Williams about the end of Game of Thrones, and though undoubtedly sad to say goodbye, how liberating it can be for her career going forward, in regards to taking on new, diverse projects.

And it wouldn’t be a celebration of independent cinema if we didn’t chat briefly to Elliot Grove, the founder of the awards. He too speaks about how many female storytellers are being recognised in this year’s nominations, and on the ceremony itself, and exactly what he loves about this entire occasion.
